Living the Sunday Liturgy
Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven
PRAYER FOCUS
Father, all powerful and ever living
God,
Today we rejoice in the holy women and men
of every time and place.
May their prayers bring us your
forgiveness and love.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Questions for Action for the week
For your marriage: Do you use the gift of touch
in your general communication?
How could you develop that with each
other this week?
For others: This week, how could you
encourage those who work for the renewal of marriage
in the church?

All Saints.
The ultimate object
of veneration of the Saints is the glory of God and
the sanctification of people by conforming one’s
life fully to the divine will and by imitating the virtue
of those who were pre-eminent disciples of the Lord.

All Souls.
The Church in
its pilgrim members, from the very earliest days of
the Christian religion, has honoured with great respect
the memory of the dead. It is a holy and a wholesome
thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosened
from their sins. (2 Mac 12:46)

A Novena
of Masses will be offered in the parish for
all the faithful departed.
November lists
of deceased relatives should be placed in the basket
provided before all

Message From Fr. Cathal Deery:
Since I was last
in contact I have had a few baptisms and had my first
funeral last week. Both are very similar to Ireland
with a few differences where funerals are concerned.
I've done a bit of traveling to various places - Dunedin,
the cathedral city of the diocese, a city of more than
100,000 people about a three hour drive from here. It's
on the east coast and has many fine attractions. I also
spent two days in a very scenic area called the Catlins
and stayed along the coast at a place called Nugget
Point. Two weeks ago I had a tour around western southland
which is a beautiful part of the south island. There
is just one big scattered parish in this area with four
churches and a combined Sunday congregation of less
than 100 people. I've never yet celebrated a Sunday
mass for just five people but that's the norm in one
of these churches! Over the next few weeks I will return
to Dunedin and then in early November I plan to spend
some time in Queenstown, one of the most popular tourist
areas of New Zealand.
Today (Tuesday)
I was invited to speak to a local Rotary Club in the
city and so I gave them something on the history of
Ireland. They seemed to like it but they looked a bit
lost when I began my presentation in Irish. Sensing
their unease I switched to the Queen's English and they
began to smile!!
Preparations
are now underway for First Holy Communion which I will
celebrate with 35 children on Sunday 22nd November.
By the time you read this I will have had a meeting
with their parents in preparation for the big day. This
evening I attended a parish council meeting where many
of the same issues and problems that we have in the
Irish church were discussed - falling mass attendance,
youth, maintenance of buildings, getting more people
involved, etc.
Anyway, as you
can see, life is good and who knows, I might like it
too well here!
For
now take care, Fr. Cathal
