Second Sunday of Easter – Sunday, 11th April 2010
...

Thomas said: “Unless I see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe”. Thomas has gone down in history with the nickname Doubting Thomas and is often referred to in relation to those who are always questioning. And that is one of his roles, to assure us that questions and doubts are an important part of true faith. We can so easily look only for certainty and perfection and then we will believe and hope and love. Our call is to believe in the setting of uncertainty, to hope even though there is insecurity, to love in spite of a lack of perfection. And there can be no doubt that all of these are present in our lives and our Church today. It is often because we can see the gaping holes in the Body of Christ left there by so many scandals, or because we are asked to put our hands into his side opened by the sins of one another that we find it difficult to believe. And unfortunately many give up.

Trócaire – Lenten Campaign: In recent weeks many people will have made donations in response to the earthquake in Haiti and may feel that they have made their contribution for this year. The silent earthquake in our midst is the scandal of hunger which causes the death of more than five million children under five years of age each year. One billion people are hungry because they don’t have the money to buy food or the resource to produce it in sufficient amounts to feed themselves and their families. Between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday 2010 this silent earthquake will have taken the lives of 600,000 children, more than twice the number who perished in Haiti. Please support Trócaire’s 2010 Lenten Campaign. Bring back you box or make a contribution marked Trócaire at any Sunday Mass.

Divine Mercy Celebration today on Sunday 11th April,

St.Macartan’s Cathedral. Everybody Welcome

Questions people Ask:

Q. In the Gospel of John the Holy Spirit came on the Apostles on Easter Sunday whereas Luke,in Acts, says it was on Pentecost, fifty days later.Which date is correct?

A. First day or fiftieth? Both days are correct because the Holy Spirit comes every day. John highlights Easter Day as the beginning of a new age and mission. The mission of Jesus, sent by the Father, was completed on Good Friday. Now the mission of the Church begins…”so I am sending you”. The Holy Spirit is bestowed on the Apostles. As Luke emphasizes the world-wide dimension of the mission, he selects Pentecost, a harvest festival, when people of far-flung lands and different languages were gathered in Jerusalem.
