Third Sunday of Advent – 13th December 2009
...Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

The people asked John: ‘What must we do?’ This question was in the context of John’s proclaiming the Good News of the coming of Christ. As we prepare for Christmas this year what a good question that is for all of us. ‘What must we do?’ If you are a parent, give time to your children rather than just giving them all the costly presents that you are planning. If you are married, give your wife/husband the gift of your attention and affection rather than spending all that time apart at Christmas parties. If you are young, give some of your time and energy to those in need rather than just looking for what you can get. If you are at odds with someone, make it up. If you are in bad form, change for the sake of those close to you. And for all of us, what we must do is put Christ at the heart of Christmas and have a wonderful time.

A MORNING IN ADVENT

As the new day dawns,
we rejoice in the first glimmers of light
which remind us of your coming, O Christ.
We give thanks
that your light has overcome all our darkness;
may we share in the mystery of your presence in the world,
and be always ready to live each day for you.

Message From Fr.Cathal

Hello everyone from springtime in Invercargill. If Ireland has experienced its wettest November since records began then Invercargill has had its windiest!! However, things have improved greatly over recent weeks and it really has that spring/ early summer feel to it now. My time here is getting very short and I've being trying to get as much in before I leave in early January. I spent a week in Queenstown in early November which was wonderful. Queenstown is about a two hour drive north from Invercargill and is probably the most visited place in New Zealand. Any younger folk who have spent any time in this country will have been to Queenstown, if only for the bungee jump (no, I didn't do one!!). The climate here is much different from Invercargill - hotter and drier. I went to many places from there - Cromwell, Wanaka, Glenorchy (where Lord of the Rings was filmed) and a beautiful area called Paradise. I stayed in a house overlooking Lake Wakatipu in which I also swam even though it was bitterly cold!! It reminded me of the Christmas Day swim in Emy Lake which I believe Fr. Brendan is doing this year. Well done Brendan.

November 22nd was First Holy Communion Sunday when 35 children received the Eucharist. It was a great celebration for school, family and parish.

I have attended two weeks ago the bi-annual Priests Retreat for Dunedin Diocese and was privileged to celebrate and preach at one of the masses there. The priests and Bishop Colin Campbell have made me most welcome and have enjoyed having an Irish man among their ranks for these few months. Many Irish priests came to New Zealand in the 20th century and so it's an honour to follow that great tradition.

Stewart Island is just off the south coast of the country and I had a really enjoyable day there. I traveled by boat (an hour long journey) and the return leg was extremely rough. Thankfully I remained totally lucid for the trip when all about me people were feeling very ill!!

So many parishioners have invited me to their homes during my time here. It has been a wonderful experience for me to have had this time and I thank God for it. The run in to Christmas will be busy and I look forward to some friends being with me from Ireland for that. It will be strange having Christmas during the summer but I'll cope!! For now, take care and God bless,

Fr. Cathal
