Second Sunday in Ordinary Time – Sunday, 17th January 2010
...

"Jesus said: 'Fill the jars with water'. And they filled them to the brim." People often think of themselves as very ordinary and the place they live in as fairly insignificant. And yet it was for people like this in a place like that that Jesus worked one of his most famous miracles. One of the keys to this reality was that the servants obeyed Jesus’ command, in fact they overdid it and they 'filled the water jars to the brim'. Jesus' command to us is to love one another as he has loved us. If we follow his command great things will also happen in our lives and in the world we live in. But we also have to use the key and fill our love to the brim. We tend however to measure out our love. This week we are asked to practise our love more intensely in our homes and communities and let Jesus transform us.

Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unit

January 18th to 25th is designated as a week of prayer for Christian Unity. It is proposed that we will reflect this year on chapter 24 of Luke’s Gospel, the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Consider the questions Jesus asks his disciples: Each of these questions allows us to highlight a particular way of witnessing to the Lord. Each question invites us to think about our own situation and experience of different denominations: We are already witnesses and we need to become better witnesses. How?

• by praising the One who gives us the gift of life and resurrection(Day1)
• by knowing how to share the story of our faith with others(Day 2)
• by recognising that God is at work in our lives (Day 3)
• by giving thanks for the faith we have received (Day 4)
• by confessing Christ’s victory over all suffering (Day 5)
• by seeking to always be more faithful to the word of God (Day 6)
• by growing in faith, hope and love (Day 7)
• by offering hospitality and knowing how to receive it when it is offered to us (Day 8)
