Bring Flowers
of the Rarest:
Little information
about this hymn is available. It still appears in a
few hymnals where its authorship is “anonymous”,
a sister of Notre Dame” or “Mary E Walsh.”
It seems to have been first published under the title
“crowning hymn” around 1871. It is about
spring, flowers and blossoms, in the pastoral setting
of woodland, hillside and dale – and about the
Queen of the May. It brings memories of going to the
May devotions each evening of the month and having a
May altar at home and in school.
O
Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today
Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May
The crowning of
the image of May has a long history. Depicting Mary
wearing a crown was found in the 5th century, East and
West. Later images have Mary, seated on a throne, dressed
like a queen and surrounded by angels and saints. Christ
is sometimes seen placing a crown on her head. The practice
of the Popes and bishops crowning her image led to a
rite of crowning being drawn up. A revised Order for
Crowning an image of the Blessed Virgin was published
in 1973 (English edition 1987)
