Pentecost Sunday – Sunday, 23rd May 2010
...

Jesus said to his disciples: “I shall ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever.” As we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Church it is good to ask the questions: How do we let the Spirit be actively present? and, How do we exclude the Spirit? We should ask these questions in the two contexts of our homes and our faith community. The Spirit is present when we are at peace with one another; the Spirit is absent when we are divided. The Spirit is present when we are living in joy; the Spirit is absent when we are settling for dullness. The Spirit is present when we are being creative and changing; the Spirit is absent when we are trying to keep things the way they always were. The Spirit is present especially when we are building relationships of love in our homes and parish.

Bring Flowers of the Rarest:

Little information about this hymn is available. It still appears in a few hymnals where its authorship is “anonymous”, a sister of Notre Dame” or “Mary E Walsh.” It seems to have been first published under the title “crowning hymn” around 1871. It is about spring, flowers and blossoms, in the pastoral setting of woodland, hillside and dale – and about the Queen of the May. It brings memories of going to the May devotions each evening of the month and having a May altar at home and in school.

O Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today
Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May

The crowning of the image of May has a long history. Depicting Mary wearing a crown was found in the 5th century, East and West. Later images have Mary, seated on a throne, dressed like a queen and surrounded by angels and saints. Christ is sometimes seen placing a crown on her head. The practice of the Popes and bishops crowning her image led to a rite of crowning being drawn up. A revised Order for Crowning an image of the Blessed Virgin was published in 1973 (English edition 1987)
