22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time – Sunday, 29th August 2010
...

Jesus said: “Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted”. Sometimes we think that to be humble means that we think that we are no good and that rightly does not fit well with us because it does not mean that at all. We have a right to know how good we are and a responsibility to help others to know how good they are. Pride means making ourselves the centre of our world and insisting that everything revolves around us. Humility means making others the centre of our lives and our energy and care are given to them. In this sense another word for humility is love. The message of Jesus again today and for this week is that if we want to be really happy we have to learn to forget about our own petty preoccupations and ourselves and give ourselves generously to God and to one another.

Reflection on Career Choice and Work

Each of us has different qualities, talents, and gifts. All are given by God who wants us to use them. Deciding on a career or entering a new job can be an anxious time. Success or failure does not give the full measure of our worth. Each one of us is unique and precious in the eyes of God. Life is measured by the kindly things we do and the happiness we give.

Along the road there are many promises and opportunities ready for the taking – some good, some false; some leading to happiness, others luring us to a desolate land. You are in the driving seat. Turn your face to the Lord, and the shadows will fall behind you.

Nothing in life that is worthy is ever too hard to achieve if you have the courage to try it, and the faith to believe. God wants us to discover all our wonderful gifts.

Most Reverend Liam S. MacDaid DD

Bishop of Clogher.

The ordination ceremony has been well documented and reported by the media, particularly the Northern Standard. There were many memorable moments throughout the ceremony but none more so than when the new Bishop addressed the following words to the people of the diocese.

My dear priests and people of Clogher there are two symbols which I wish to recall from to-days ceremony- the laying on of Hands(symbol of the guiding Spirit of God) and of the book of the Gospels (the Word of God). Let us embrace these gifts and make our way together to the well of salvation.

There we are assured we will find living water which will nourish the spirit as well as the body. It will be water which we can safely offer our children; water which will protect our universe as well as enriching the quality of our lives and leading us to everlasting life. In the words of to-day’s Gospel; anyone who wants to be great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
