First Sunday of Advent – 29th November 2009
...Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Jesus said to his disciples: "hold your heads high, for your liberation is close at hand". Over the past few years, with all the revelations of scandals in the Church and society, there is a lot for us to be ashamed of and repent for. However, the resulting despair that some people have experienced is not necessary because there continues to be so much goodness in the Church and society that we can be proud of. This week we begin a new year in our journey of faith with Christ. It is an opportunity to once again have confidence in his presence with us, and his power in us. Without in any way being unrealistic, this is a time to look towards him to save us and to set us free. We will find that freedom in how we are with one another in our homes and in our parish community as we approach Christmas and beyond with love rather than selfishness.

A MORNING IN ADVENT

As the new day dawns,
we rejoice in the first glimmers of light
which remind us of your coming, O Christ.
We give thanks
that your light has overcome all our darkness;
may we share in the mystery of your presence in the world,
and be always ready to live each day for you.

The Flood

Our thoughts and prayers are with the many people who have been affected by the recent floods. Imagine having to leave your own home or business to escape the devastation caused by the storms, and having no access to clean water, food, and in many cases shelter or medical supplies. In the longer term, we must resolve to help the hundreds of people in the worst affected areas to rebuild their lives and their livelihoods.

Fund Raiser in Aid of Victim Support

We appeal to people to donate bed linen, duvets and clothes in relatively new condition that could help make a difference to the flood victims lives. Items that are not in good condition will not be accepted. All items will be greatly accepted at the Workhouse, Shercock Road, Carrickmacross on Monday the 30th of November and Tuesday the 1st of December between 10am and 5pm. Your help would be greatly appreciated. If you wish to donate please send all donations to Flood Victim Support AIB Ashbourne, Co. Meath. For further information please do not hesitate to contact Bridie Racey on 0879364355.

Mission boxes

The holy Ghost Missions, Kimmage Manor, Dublin, wish to acknowledge with thanks your generous donation of €96.36, contents of mission boxes in Emyvale businesses. This will help missionary work in Africa, Asia and Latin America, where there is widespread poverty, malnutrition, drought, famine, Aids etc. Africa is largely ignored and forgotten by our western media. Thanks for your continued support and be assured of remembrance in the missions masses and prayers.
