31st Sunday in Ordinary Time – Sunday, 31st October 2010
...

They all complained when they saw what was happening. “He (Jesus) has gone to stay at a sinner’s house,” they said. One of the lovely features of the Gospels is that Jesus had no problem with what we would call sinners. He didn’t condone what they did but he had great compassion for them. The other side of that feature was that he had a lot of difficulty with good people. And he still has! He found it almost impossible to break through to them with the Good News of God’s unconditional love for every person because, if they were God, they would not be like that. So, as we struggle to live out our faith through the various relationships of our lives we need to be ready for failure and be gentle with ourselves. But we also need to be very gentle with one another and become a source of encouragement for one another rather than putting one another down through criticism.

First Reading: Wisdom 11: 22 – 12: 2
You are merciful too all because you love all that exists.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 1: 11-22
By his power – fulfill all your desires for goodness.

Gospel: Luke 19: 1-10
Catch a glimpse of Jesus.

Most Reverend Liam S. MacDaid DD

Bishop of Clogher.

The ordination ceremony has been well documented and reported by the media, particularly the Northern Standard. There were many memorable moments throughout the ceremony but none more so than when the new Bishop addressed the following words to the people of the diocese.

My dear priests and people of Clogher there are two symbols which I wish to recall from to-days ceremony- the laying on of Hands(symbol of the guiding Spirit of God) and of the book of the Gospels (the Word of God). Let us embrace these gifts and make our way together to the well of salvation.

There we are assured we will find living water which will nourish the spirit as well as the body. It will be water which we can safely offer our children; water which will protect our universe as well as enriching the quality of our lives and leading us to everlasting life. In the words of to-day’s Gospel; anyone who wants to be great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
